Cheltenham Town boss John Ward couldn’t contain his delight after seeing his side book a third round tie at home to Chester after seeing off beating Oxford 2-1 at the Kassam Stadium.

‘I can’t state strongly enough how big a result this is for Cheltenham,’ claimed Ward. ‘These nights don’t come often enough at Cheltenham Town. The players were certainly up for it.’

It took a superb goal from Brian Wilson, albeit in controversial circumstances, to send the Robins through, 11 minutes from time.

Kayode Odejayi had given Ward’s men the lead, taking advantage of Leo Roget’s hesistancy to fire home for the visitors.

Oxford bounced back to level through Steve Basham, but after home defender Chris Willmott was adjudged to have fouled Odejayi, Wilson stepped up to send his curling free-kick into the top corner.

‘Brian practises those free-kicks in training, and they fly into the top corner on a regular basis,? Ward added.
