Manager Mark Yates has admitted that Cheltenham definitely needed the recent victory over Morecambe in the league.

Speaking to the Official Site following the one nil victory in the league, and our second victory of the season against them, the gaffer explained that he did have a little moan at half time because he was astonished that with the chances we were creating that we hadn’t managed to finish any of them off.

‘We were creating chances and we even had 7 in 10 seconds! I thought we had three or four really good opportunities, Jermaine should have done better with one, Byron had a good header saved and those are the moments that can be key so we have to start being more ruthless.’

Pleasingly though, the squad kept going and that did give Yates something to cheer about as we didn’t let the missed chances get to us or let our heads drop, we just kept on plugging away looking for the break and eventually it came.

Come the final whistle Yates was also pleased to see us come away from home and effectively boss the match whilst playing some decent stuff in the process, especially as it resulted in a return of all three points.

‘I watched the goalmouth scramble at half time and it looked even worse on the video! It happens, and we’ve had four or five chances but fortunately we’re talking about a win rather than a draw.’

Cheltenham are now of course eight unbeaten in the league and the manager is pretty pleased with that given our form earlier in the campaign, and again he repeats that he knows we have some good players at the club and the only way they will show that is by winning games and that’s something that, despite being unbeaten, he still wants us to do more regularly.

So on that score we remain a work in progress for the gaffer and he still expects more improvement to come but he has been pleased with how we have tightening up defensively in recent weeks.
