Manager Mark Yates has said he was very proud of the team following the Capital One Cup loss to Championship Brighton last night.

Cheltenham went down two nil on the night eventually, but speaking to the Official Site following the game, Yates explained that he had been delighted with the efforts of the lads and he felt we put in a real shift to effectively keep them out until near the final ten minutes of normal time.

‘I am proud of my team. I thought they worked tirelessly and put in a real shift against a good side. It took them to the 79 minute to break us down and the goal at the end we didn’t deserve but it happens. We weren’t as offensive as I would have liked to have been but we wanted the boys to show workrate, ability with the ball and they nearly did that.’

Yates goes on to say that he felt one or two players were absolutely ‘superb’ for us and he was delighted to see the system really starting to suit us again now.

The disappointing thing if anything is the gaffer knows that their opening goal came from us just switching off unfortunately and then the second was us trying to press ourselves in the hope of getting back into it, but we stretched and they broke but there are far more positives he can take from the game than negatives.

Building on the opening day of the league season with a showing like that he continues to say that if we keep putting in that kind of effort then ‘we’ll do okay’ this season in his eyes.

‘Bring on Accrington on Saturday now because we need the same attitude, workrate, commitment and endeavour. We need to try and create a little bit more.’
