With Cheltenham Town pretty much being written off by the pundits when we faced Bury yesterday, the gaffer was overjoyed to see us come out of the game with a one nil victory.

Having already talked about how difficult a game it would be for us given Bury’s push and hope for automatic promotion this season, Yates told the Official Site that he couldn’t have been more delighted with the performance and the effort from the lads.

‘I’m delighted. It’s a tough place to come and we have had a tough pre season but we didn’t do ourselves justice last week. Everyone wrote us off and I think for a team that apparently doesn’t have a style or too many good players we showed people that we have. We are probably light in quality but results like that give us something to build on. All the supporters want to see is hard work and effort and they did that marshalled by my Captain (Matt Taylor), Stevey and Troy.’

Yates goes on to say that in many ways how we didn’t find ourselves two goals to the good still baffles him because having watched the goal back again from Joe Hanks, he feels the referee ‘gave it and changed his mind’ and he doesn’t know why he changed his mind because it looked a perfectly good goal to him.

Moving back to the positives though, the discipline and shape the side kept really did please him especially as Taylor isn’t yet 100% and he was pleased to see us limit a good Bury side to so few chances even though we were under the cosh as the game came to an end.

With Yates still waiting on a few clubs to make up their minds on enquiries he’s made, saying we are close but not there yet, the injury to Asa Hall will obviously be a concern.
