Manager Gary Johnson has said that he feels Cheltenham are now back on an upward curve following relegation last term.

In quotes carried by the Gloucestershire Echo Johnson said that we should use Torquay as motivation for how difficult the National League can be, and use their experience of last year to drive us on to hopefully achieving our aim of bouncing back at the first time of asking.

‘There are teams on an upward spiral in the leagues and there are teams on a downward spiral and you have to make sure you nip the downward spiral in the bud as quickly as you can. I think we did that in pre-season with the positivity with the players we brought in.’

He went on to say that with recent results and a change of atmosphere he feels we’re on the upward curve now but of course it’s early days and with 41 games left to go, we’ve a long journey ahead of us.

‘We’ve got to do all we can to make sure we’re successful this year. We can all take the responsibility on our shoulders and do the job every day and see where it takes us.’

Come the end of August, we’ll have played seven games since the season began and rather than being a hindrance, Johnson believes that has been a positive for us as it’s forced the players together quickly in terms of bonding and gelling.

‘We couldn’t go on tour but if we did go on tour this is how they would have felt getting to know each other and we’ve made sure that by not going on tour it hasn’t affected us. They’re still a close bunch at the moment. I got them all in early in pre-season so they could get to know each other, they could attend events together, train hard together. I’ve kept the group together for four or five games we’ve had one to 11 so I think it’s important that that group empathised with each other and I’ve been really pleased with that.’
